Update: Restaurant is closed.
I will admit I was doubtful about the positive reviews of Little Havana before I visited the venue, largely because I have not had good experiences at other Cuban restaurants in DC. Having visited Cuba a couple of years ago, I know Cuban food can be great (read all about my trip here!). To my surprise and delight, Little Havana does a stellar job of showcasing the best of Cuban flavors.
The Venue
The small, charming spot is on 14th street, on the same strip as Taqueria Habanero and Mezcalero (which is also owned by Alfredo Solis). The venue has Cuban music playing, a patio out front, and gorgeous murals of Cuba painted on the walls. The cheerful atmosphere will make your dining experience all the more pleasurable.
The Drinks
Fun and full of rum, the drink list at Little Havana has everything from classic mojitos to pina coladas (not frozen!). The rum punch is a treat, and I love the “El Cubano”,with rum, Campari, and sparkling wine.
The Food
Kick off your meal at Little Havana with a plate of tostones to share, as well as an order of their empanadas. The tostones are freshly fried and crunchy, served with heaps of corn and drizzled in a creamy sauce. The veggie filled empanadas are savory and will awaken your appetite for the next courses.
Next up, I had the Cuban stuffed peppers, where peppers come smothered in rice, tomatoes, black beans, corn, olives and a healthy amount of melted cheese. The Romanesco sauce on to is nutty and bold. It is super hearty and pretty authentic – I had a similar dish in Havana. Be sure to get a side order of patacones, because every Cuban meal needs fried plantains.
Don’t skip out on dessert, even if you are stuffed. The puffed pastry filled with guava and sweet cheese is delightful; it’s the perfect flaky and fruity way to end your meal. A must at Little Havana.
Little Havana: The Verdict
Not only is the food delicious at Little Havana, but it is also affordable. Most of the entrees fall between $12-16. This is the perfect spot for a casual date night or dinner with friends. With an order of tostones, a bevy of cocktails, and the salsa music playing the background, you are guaranteed to have a good time at this cozy Cuban restaurant in DC.
