Review by Audrey Wong, Dining Traveler Contributor

As someone who has previously been able to see Cirque du Soleil shows before as a kid, I was thrilled to be able to revisit one of my favorite childhood attractions with the opening of their new show, Luzia at Tyson’s Corner in Virginia. Inspired by the landscape and folklore of Mexico, Luzia is a feast for the senses that you don’t want to miss if you find yourself in the DC area.

Getting There

My friend and I traveled by metro to get to Tysons and as soon as we stepped out of the metro station, we were greeted to our left with the sight of the giant, white, peaked tents. We quickly checked in and got our tickets scanned before wandering through the activity still happening outside of the tent. A few characters from the show were milling through the crowd, already dressed in their brightly colored costumes, taking pictures on the outdoor red carpet, and smoothly gliding their wings in the wind, like the beautiful butterfly acrobat that we encountered on her stilts.

The Venue

Ducking past the curtains into the entrance of the tent, our eyes were immediately drawn up high where colorful streamers trailed all the way up to the inner peaks of the tent. The bustle around us was wild and colorful as drinks, snacks, and merchandise was sold. Luzia’s theme “A Waking Dream of Mexico” was ever present from the offerings of margaritas and sangria at the drinks stand to the churros being offered. The beautiful furniture seatings and decor in bold patterns of bright reds, oranges, and pinks will remind you of the colorful soul of Mexico.

The Show

After finding our seats (second row from the stage!), we admired the full stage bursting with flowers and waited in anticipation of the show to start. Alison had never been to a Cirque du Soleil show before and was a little worried about the angle of our seats and our ability to see, but this was not to worry. Luzia features a revolving stage that turns in slow circles so that audiences may enjoy the acts from all of the best angles. With everything from high-flying performances to fascinating, yet chilling contortion, “A Waking Dream of Mexico” is unfurled with every act of woe, triumph, camaraderie, and family.

Luzia: The Verdict

From the beautiful stage design and the lovely costumes reminiscent of Mexican icons to the live music and, of course, the stunning acrobatics, Luzia is an incredible show that flies audiences to Mexico for a transportive two hours.

Practical Information: Luzia at Tyson’s Corner will show from April 12th to June 17th. Tickets begin at $39 (booking page here). Looking to stay in Tyson’s Corner and make it into a staycation? Check out our reviews of Ritz Carlton Tyson’s Corner and Hyatt Regency Tysons.
