The diversity of dining options in D.C. never ceases to amaze me, largely because it is so recent. Ten years ago all we had was Italian restaurants and steakhouses, and now we are home to everything from Laotian to Colombian food. Now, we even have Georgian food. Having been to Russia a few years ago, I am familiar with Georgian cuisine and find it to be hearty and flavorful, full of doughy bread, cheese, fresh vegetables and lots of things to share. Read to find out if D.C.’s new Georgian restaurant, Supra, lives up to my memories of Georgia fare.
The Meal
Supra is open for lunch, brunch and dinner and while there are different plates on each menu, some items do overlap. I have actually been for all three meals and have found quite a few highlights. The dishes are great for sharing so I suggest picking a bunch for the group and sampling away! Prices are reasonable, so you can order plenty without going broke.
First, the eggplant nigvizit: one of my favorites at Supra. Thin slabs of eggplant are rolled around a meaty and savory filling of mashed walnuts and pomegranate seeds. The hidden pomegranates add just a pop of sweetness, and the soft eggplant is the perfect contrast to the dense filling. With it, order the salad Kutaisi, where hunks of tomato, wheels of cucumber, sliced red onion and loads herbs are tossed in a creamy house dressing. It’s refreshing and light. I also highly recommend the bread and spreads. Chunks of crusty bread are served with a trio of dips: one, a dip made of grilled veggies, second, a creamy white bean, and the third a rich and luscious cheese dip.
Classic Georgian Fare: Khachapuri
Between these three dishes you may be close to full but there are other items not to miss, one being the quintessential Georgian dish: khachapuri. This famous dish features bread that rises, and then is filled with cheese. At Supra you can enjoy the classic, as well as one with an egg yolk, one with spinach and cheese and one with white beans. My favorite is the classic; its super warm and savory and cheese. Comforting and delicious, this is one item you will order every time you come to Supra.
The Drinks
At brunch, a mimosa is essential. But at dinner do not miss the eclectic wine list which only features Georgian wines. If it seems unfamiliar or overwhelming, just ask your server they are well-versed in explaining the wine list.
Supra: The Verdict
Supra is a great spot for trying something new; the venue is comfortable but elegant and the food can satisfy you if you need something light (salad and bread) or something more hearty (khachapuri and potatoes). Come in for a quick lunch, a long dinner with friends, or a romantic date. Either way, you will have a great mean!
