When the Dining Traveler and I get together for lunch it’s always a good time, and having baby Dining Traveler there only added to our fun when we went to DC Harvest for lunch recently. I had never been to the venue before, but it’s a super cool spot with two casual dining rooms and menu full of dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. Not only did we stuff our faces with delicious food, but baby Dining Traveler had her first pickle ever and loved it! Sounds like we may have to go back again soon….

The Food

DC Harvest normally is only open for dinner and weekend brunch, but recently decided to start serving Friday lunch. We went over to sample the new lunch menu. We kicked off our meal with a rustic spring shoots salad, which featured greens, radishes, sunflower seeds and dollops of tangy housemade goat cheese, all tossed in a citrusy kumquat dressing. It was a great, seasonal opener to the meal.

Friday Lunch

I followed up with a main course that included quinoa cakes served on a bed of carrot puree, served alongside sautéed fiddleheads and potatoes. The quinoa cakes were savory and crispy, perfect for dipping into the sweet carrot puree. The fiddleheads were especially awesome; they were uber flavorful as it is the height of fiddlehead season.

The Dessert

For dessert we shared the s’mores pudding: a cool chocolate pudding topped with bruleed marshmallows. It was luscious and heavenly. Ginger cookies are served on the side for dipping.

The Drinks

We stuck with non-alcoholic beverages since it was lunchtime, but we didn’t miss the alcohol at all because these mocktails were as good as cocktails. The blood orange rosemary drink was sweet and effervescent with a touch of ginger ale, and the cucumber lime spritzer was cool, tart, and refreshing.

DC Harvest: The Verdict

DC Harvest is a great spot to enjoy local bounty, cooked in a way that is delicious and satisfying. I look forward to going back! Will bring baby Dining Traveler so she can get her pickle fix.
