Yes, ‘tis the season to be jolly and at long last, it is time to bring out the yuletide decorations and go wild. The weather certainly helps; temperatures in the DMV area have dropped and the first snow of the season is on the ground. Time to curl up with a hot cocoa after an active afternoon or sip on some mulled wine after an active day of holiday shopping in Georgetown. Well, you can do all this and more at the Fairmont Washington, DC.

The Fairmont Washington, DC has transformed into a true winter wonderland. Enter the hotel and be bedazzled by the warm Christmas atmosphere of original yet tasteful decorations. Comfortable chairs and couches are perfect to sit back and relax after a walk in adjacent historic Georgetown and to enjoy the Fairmont’s famous afternoon tea. The ‘modern afternoon tea’ menu features sweet (including gingerbread cake and chocolate peppermint tart) as well as savory (including smoked salmon, black forest ham, curried chicken) bites and naturally an extensive and exclusive tea selection. If you feel like really treating yourself, go for the Champagne pairing which includes the full tea service and a glass of Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut or Thienot Rosé.

Although there is not an ice skating rink this year, there’s still plenty of gorgeous holiday decorations to admire. Christmas trees, lots of twinkling lights and the scent of cloves, cinnamon and star anise coming from the mulled wine stand; this really is a winter wonderland. Don’t worry if you’re not in the mood for alcohol, the hot chocolate bar literally couldn’t be more inviting; snowman figurine marshmallows, candy, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, putting together your own hot chocolate will make you feel like a kid again.

Speaking of feeling like a kid; Santa himself loves to spend some time at the Fairmont Washington, DC and you can go visit him in the magical ‘Santa Suite’. We took baby Dining Traveler with us up to the Santa Suite. It all begins at the lobby where a Radio Flyer filled with toys welcomes us. La picola was allowed to take one toy and head up to the suite. I am not going to give all of it away as you have to experience it for yourself! Needless to say, you get to meet Santa in the most decadent of environments.

I’ve been hearing about the holiday displays at The Fairmont for years and this year I finally got to experience it. Believe the hype-it’s that magical! Whether you stop by with your friends to warm up with mulled wine and reminisce about 2018 or have your children experience the Santa Suite, make sure to experience The Fairmont Washington, DC this holiday season.

The Santa Suite is available from 11-3pm Saturdays and Sundays until December 23rd. It is free to attend, but you have to sign up on Eventbrite beforehand. Although it is free, the Fairmont encourages guests to give a donation to Horton’s Kids, a local charity. Horton’s Kids empowers children growing up in one of Washington, DC’s most under-resourced communities so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career and life.

The most wonderful time of the year…at the Fairmont Washington, DC Editor’s note: this post was originally posted December 2017, it has recently been updated to reflect this year’s holiday offerings at The Fairmont Washington, DC.
