This year I went to the Fauquier County Wine Tasting and Competition. Based on how much fun it was I will definitely make attending this annual event a priority! The event was held at Airlie, a stunning historic manor house that serves as a hotel and wedding venue. About an hour outside of D.C., the manor is located on a gorgeous 300 acre property which is complete with stunning pastoral scenery and a lake.

Fauquier County Wine Tasting & Competition

The wine tasting event and competition occupied two large event rooms at Airlie, where different wineries set up stations for wine tasting. I took my bestie to the event, and as soon as we arrived we started making the rounds!

Our Favorite Wines

Our favorite wines of the event were Pearmund Cellars, which had a fantastic cabernet franc, and Molon Lave Vineyards, which featured a gorgeous semi-sweet white. We also enjoyed wines from Narmada Winery and Barrel Oak Winery. Each station not only had wines to sample, but a tasty snack to pair with the wine. In the center of each room was a huge display of breads, jams, cheeses, and other treats. In between sampling wine we grabbed cheese and sat out on the stunning patio to enjoy the venue.

The Scene

After all the wine tasting we purchased a few bottles, we jumped on our shuttle and hit the road. If you missed the event this year, I highly recommend gathering a group of friends and renting a shuttle to take you to this all–day event next year. Your ticket includes unlimited wine tasting and plenty of snacks, plus the opportunity to vote for your favorite Fauquier County Wine. The tickets this year ranged from $35-$95.  While sampling the wine is fun, it was also interesting to meet the winemakers and learn more about the individual wineries.

The Verdict

Whether you are a wino or a novice wine drinker, you will love this annual Virginia wine tasting event! Fauquier County wine is a great addition to the booming Virginia wine scene.

Must admit I have lived in DC for three years and this summer was the first time time I visited the Loudoun County wineries. A little over an hour away from DC, there are beautiful rolling hills lined with vineyards and up and coming winemakers.  It’s world away from government buildings and buzzing helicopters.  It makes it the perfect day trip from Washington, DC.

Loudoun County Wineries Stone Tower

One of the things I love about wine is that it tells a story.  Whether it is Riesling at the Finger Lakes of urban vineyards in Vienna, there is always a tale to be told.  One of the things I prefer about visiting smaller producers is that the tale is personal.  You can taste and smell the passion and love that goes behind winemaking.  This is no different at the Loudoun County wineries. Here are five wineries to visit in Virginia Wine Country:

Loudoun County Wineries Creeks Edge
The beautiful tasting room at Creek’s Edge

Creek’s Edge: Sitting along the Catoctin Creek, there’s Creek’s Edge Winery.  The tasting room is dark and cozy with beautiful wooden details, to include a gorgeous spiral staircase which leads to their cellar.  Their tasting room also lends itself to weddings and its outdoor space hosts a series of concerts during the summer.  Dining Travel Wine Pick: the 2012 Cabernet Franc, it’s spicy scent and peppery taste makes you want to bring a case home!

Loudoun County Wineries Doukenie
Hope’s Baklava at Doukenie

Doukenie:  One of the most memorable stories I heard during my time at the Loudoun County wineries is the Doukenie wine story. The Bazaco family, who still lives at the Doukenie farm grounds,  brought their passion for wine and agriculture from Greece to the United States almost a century ago.  That passion can be tasted in their wines, which are light on the palate and perfect to have on a hot summer day at their beautiful patio. If you have the chance, have a tasting with Maria. She’s a former chef who will not only walk you through the tastings but will give you some great food pairing tips.   Dining Traveler Tip: Conclude your tasting with Hope’s Baklava which is homemade by the Hope Bazaco, the family matriarch.

Strolling around the beautiful grounds of Stone Tower Winery

Stone Tower Winery:  This gorgeous winery quickly grabs your attention due to its impressive attention to detail.  A family operated winery, we were welcomed by Lacey, the owner’s daughter who manages this beautiful property.  They have two tasting rooms.  The first tasting room is rustic, where families and dogs are welcome.  Their second tasting room and cellar are a different story.  The decor is elegant yet modern with a beautiful neutral palette.  Children are not allowed and the atmosphere is laid back luxury.  The cellar leads to a beautiful event space which makes me hope that one of my friends chooses to get married there with its impressive views of the vineyards. Dining Traveler Wine Pick:  the viognier.  The grape thrives in Virginia and it has a light, fruity taste that goes well with the hot Virginia summers.

Loudoun County Wineries Greenhill Vineyards
Blanc de Blancs at Greenhill Vineyards

Greenhill Winery:  Who knew Virginia could produce such a beautiful blanc de blancs?  It is done at Greenhill Winery.  Sommelier Anthony Downing walked us through the detailed tasting. Not to miss:  The winery provides a two hour guided tour of the vineyards followed by a tasting all year round.  The tasting room may be smaller than Stone Tower or Creek’s edge but it does provide an intimate experience with great wine. This winery also loves all things local, it has a special area with locally made products.  You can grab cheese, meats, and honey made from local producers. Dining Traveler Wine Pick: the blanc de blancs, it’s simply beautiful.

Loudoun County Wineries 50West
Katya and I at my most recent trip to the Loudoun County Wineries

50West:  The location, as the name implies, is conveniently located off of route 50 in Middleburg, VA.   It is one of the newest additions to the Loudoun County wineries.  It is still a work in progress as they are still completing their licensing process to label their own wine.  They are currently serving wine from their sister vineyard, Sunset Hills.  Sitting atop a hill, we caught beautiful fall foliage from their spacious patio.  They plan to complete their event space in the winter of 2015. Dining Traveler Wine Pick: The 2014 rose of cabernet franc. It has the perfect balance of a citrus flavors with a light finish.

The Verdict:  After two trips to the Loudoun County wineries, I am sold.  I have been to the wine region extremes: ones where you feel you need to be a sommelier to have a bonafide experience to others who produce “wine slushies” (the horror).  This area strikes the perfect balance.  Although Loudoun County is a young wine region, I admire that winemakers are experimenting with grapes and soil without disrespecting deep rooted wine traditions.

When we decided to have our destination wedding in Barcelona, we wanted to organize something unique for our guests.  We both love wine and good food and decided to go cava tasting in Penedes.  Our local friends recommended we visit the Cellar of Jaume Giró i Giró, a small artisanal cava maker located in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, a small wine producing village in the iconic Penedes region of Catalunya.  A fifty-five minute drive from Barcelona (it also has its own train stop), Sant Sadurní d’Anoia is not only very accessible from Barcelona but it offers a beautiful escape.  After a few days discovering Barcelona, the sight of rolling vineyards automatically made us feel relaxed and at home.

Garden at Cava Giro i Giro
When we arrived at Cava Giró, we were welcomed by the owner, Ramón Giró, a third generation winemaker.  His grandfather, Ramón Giró i Mata started the business in 1926 and tradition has continued since.  Ramón personally took us on a tour of his whole cellar and gave us a warm introduction.  Although Ramón speaks English, Gloria, one of our guests volunteered as a translator because the narrative of the tour had so much more passion in Spanish (which was felt even with those who did not understand the language).
Wine Tasting at Jaume Giro i Giro
He began the tour of the property with talking us through his organic garden across the street from the cellar.  There, they grow vegetables which are used for food and compost. The garden also has a lovely seating area which can be used for parties (I am already fantasizing about a vow renewal!) and family events.  He shared with us how the place is popular in the summer as he allows guests to bring their own food and have barbecues in this space.

The day was warm and sunny which created a contrast as we followed to the second part of our tour, the cellar.  In the cool and dark space, we got a step by step process on how the cava is made.  The scent of fermented grapes accompanied us as we walked by the thousand bottles of cava, in different stages of production.  Mounted on the wall was the first bottle the third generation Giró made: a cava from 1983, a reminder that this is truly his passion, something you can feel as he enthusiastically speaks about the production years.  He went on great detail about the latest vintages and how much of the production is still made by hand, contrary to the mass production from larger houses.

Cellar Giro i Giro
We returned back to the surface and admired the garden of the cellar: bright yellow lemons grow against the walls, beautiful art hangs from the office space (which Ramón also volunteers for art exhibits), and the sun shines through the small windows of the receiving hall.  After a very thorough and passionate tour, we were ready for the best part: degustación, (the tasting).  We sat on the cellar’s second terrace, adjacent to the welcome hall.  The sun shone on us and grapevines hung above us as natural garlands.  There we sampled three cavas:  Bombonetta Gran Reserva, Rosat del Cal Rei, and Selecte Gran Reserva Brut Nature.  The Selecte Gran Reserva was the winner among us, which many people took home as souvenirs.  It’s a Brut from 2007 which I plan to pair with a tuna tartare for a special occasion.

Entrance of the Cellar
Given we were a group of twenty, we rented a coach to get to Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. After a little research, we discovered it was half the price of a guided tour and provided us the autonomy to see what we wanted at our own pace.  Our original plan was to visit this house and a larger cellar on the same day but we were completely taken by the process of artisanal cava making and spent the whole day there sampling all the different varieties.  I’ve been to Veuve Clicquot in Rheims and Moet et Chandon in Epernay and although amazing experiences, having a personal tour from the wine maker himself cannot be compared. Have you been cava tasting in Penedes? What is your favorite cellar?
