Lisbon, one of the most popular European cities of late, has gained its reputation for a reason: picturesque landscapes, delicious food, and affordable experiences. Although two days in Lisbon may be a short stay, that’s plenty of time to get acquainted with the city, eat all the great food, and sip Vinho Verde at a cozy bar. Here are my tips, and scroll to the bottom for a full itinerary.

Take a TukTuk Tour

One of my favorite ways to get an orientation of a new city is by boat, walking or bike tour. However, in Lisbon, I tried a new way to explore the city: by TukTuk, a motorbike with seating attached to the back, which allows you to see the city from a dynamic angle. Our guide stopped at all the key spots, such as the photogenic Santa Maria Maior neighborhood, and gave us a brief overview. I love this way of exploring because if you only have two days in Lisbon, you can get a guided orientation of the city and pick which places you want to return to for the rest of your trip.

Our hotel, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, booked the TukTuk experience via the Concierge, but you can also book these separately. Since Lisbon has become a popular tourist destination, I highly recommend you book this in advance via your hotel or a tour provider. There are usually drivers in the tourist hotspots who offer rides, but I would go with a vetted source. The tours cost 80 to 100 EUR depending on how long you want it to be. Our TukTuk tour took around four hours, the perfect length to get a good overview of the city.

Where to Stay

I stayed at the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, a Portuguese luxury hotel brand that has been around for over 100 years. You see the local touches throughout–pasteis de nata upon arrival, an expansive art collection by Portuguese artists throughout the property, and Claus Porto toiletries in the room (more on those later). The rooms are spacious, with comfy beds and all the amenities you can expect from a luxury hotel. Tucked away in the rear of the property, you will find a pool that is open during the summer months. Surrounded by leafy green plants and cabanas, it makes for a perfect spot to rest after sightseeing.

As a luxury hotel, the prices average 200-300 EUR per night, depending on the season. However, it’s worth it if you’re looking for a comfortable space with easy access to all the highlights, especially if you only spend two days in Lisbon. The location of Avenida Liberdade is perfect as a base for shopping, dining, and sightseeing. Also, this location is only a 30-minute taxi ride from the airport, which is a bonus. The street is home to many luxury European stores but doesn’t feel overly touristy. On the weekends, you can tell this is a hotspot amongst locals, especially as it is home to Seen, one of the hottest rooftop bars in the city. 

Where to Eat in Lisbon

Portuguese food is known for its seafood dishes like grilled octopus (polvo), rice and seafood (arroz de tamboril), and codfish fritters (pastéis de bacalhau). If you’re a seafood lover like me, you’re in for a treat. Here are a few places to add to your list:

Pastéis de Belén:  The driver who took me to the hotel recommended this spot, a local favorite to grab pastéis de nata, the egg tarts with a flaky shell. This classic bakery has been in business for almost 200 years and is a favorite amongst locals and visitors. 

Cervejaria Ramiro: Even if you spend only two days in Lisbon, you must add a cervejaria to your list. Cervejaria means brewery in Portuguese; these taverns provide more than just beer but a look into Portuguese food culture. Cervejaria Ramiro is a classic, serving an extensive list of local seafood like shrimp, oysters, and crab.

Time Out Market Lisbon: If you want to get a taste of different flavors under one roof, check out Time Out Market London, an indoor market with dozens of options, from classic Portuguese cuisine to gourmet pizzas and burgers. Note: get there before or after the lunch rush because it can get jam-packed! 

Minibar: My Dining Traveler hot take is that if a restaurant is too stylish, the food will usually suffer. Not the case with Minibar by the famed Portuguese chef José Avillez. The dining room is sexy, with a stunning mural of Dita von Teese at the bar, friendly waitstaff, and a creative tasting menu.

Where to Shop

Even if you’re not a shopper, set aside at least an hour even if you’re spending just two days in Lisbon. Portugal is home to world-class leather manufacturers with a variety of masterly crafted shoes and handbags. If you love bringing food and wine home, this is your place. I fell in love with Portuguese wine, especially the Negra Mole varietal, which I rarely find outside of Portugal. Tinned fish is also a popular item to buy. A beautiful tin of sardines paired with a nice bottle of wine makes the perfect gift for the epicurean in your life.

Claus Porto: One of my favorite stops was the Claus Porto flagship store. Several years ago, a friend gifted me a hand cream from Claus Porto, and the brand stayed with me. The façade itself is a photo op: handpainted tiles adorn the shop’s entrance. Inside, you will find soaps wrapped in beautiful paper, making you feel guilty to open the package alongside hand creams, fragrances, and scented diffusers.

EmbaiXada: If you want an all-in-one place to check out clothing and art made by Portuguese designers, EmbaiXada is the place. I wish I had a few extra days in Lisbon just to hang out here. This is where I first encountered the Lemon Jelly brand, rainboots made in Portugal with recycled materials. I saw a pair of yellow boots that I regretted not buying there, but luckily, I found them at another shop in Algarve. Their shoes are unique, stylish, and affordable. 

Garrafeira Nacional: While strolling around Lisbon, I stumbled across Garrafeira Nacional, a wine shop. If you’re an oenophile, plan to spend at least 30 minutes browsing their unique selections of Portuguese wines, Portos, and even locally-produced spirits like gin. I am usually a carry-on girl, but you must ensure you have space to bring at least two good bottles home!

Avenida Liberdade: If you’re traveling from outside the European Union, note that you can get a VAT (tax refund) for your purchases of 50 EUR or more. Make sure you bring your passport so they can create a VAT form you will need to present at the airport. Now that you’re armed with this information, you can shop at the European luxury stores lining Avenida Liberdade. The classic names are all there, but smaller European luxury brands are also present. 

What to See & Do With Only Two Days in Lisbon

In my humble opinion, the ideal length of stay should be 4-5 days, especially in the summer, when you can head to the beaches just outside the city. But if you only have two days in Lisbon, I recommend you add the landmarks below to your itinerary. Note: we saw most of the main landmarks during our TukTuk tour of Lisbon. 

Santa Justa Lift: This tower, located in the Baixa District, has a birdseye view of the city. I loved the surrounding neighborhood, with cozy coffee shops and independently owned shops.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia: For great views of Lisbon and the Tagus River. Just a five-minute walk, you will find São Miguel Street, home to many Fado restaurants and taverns. 

San Antonio Church: Saint Anthony Church is one of the most famous churches in the city. Not only is the architecture impressive, but it’s also said to be the birthplace of Saint Anthony and is considered a national monument. 

Go on a Tram Ride: Nothing says Lisbon like a tram ride. Tram line 28 is best known for its scenic views. Tourists pack the trams during the peak hours, so it’s best to do an early morning ride. 

Bars and Nightclubs

Lisbon is a lively city with plenty of bars, live music, and nightclubs to experience. Whether lounging at a melancholic Fado bar or a celebrity sighting at a stylish rooftop, you must add this to your two days in Lisbon schedule.

Seen: If you’re a fan of a stylish rooftop, Seen Lisbon is the place for you. I visited during the winter, but I am adding this to my summer list since the outdoor terrace will be lively. My friend visited Seen last summer and had a Cristiano Ronaldo sighting, so it’s truly the place to be seen. Tip: make a reservation and come hungry. Seen has some of the best sushi I’ve tasted in Europe.

São Miguel de Alfama Restaurant: If bohemian bars are more your thing, experience a night of Fado music at this restaurant and tavern playing live music. 

LuxFrágil: I am a retired club girl, but I asked a few folks in the scene in Lisbon, and they recommended LuxFrágil. Warning: make it an all-night event since the nightclubs start popping at 1 am!

Mama Shelter: For our last night, a friend suggested Mama Shelter for dinner and drinks. I love the Mama Shelter brand; it’s my go-to hotel for visiting Paris. I’ll be honest: the food was not my favorite, but I did love the cocktails and the lively bar scene; I will skip the food next time and stay for drinks.

The Dining Traveler 2-Day Itinerary to Lisbon:

Day 1:

Afternoon: Go shopping at EmbaiXada and the boutiques around Praça do Príncipe Real, and explore the Lisbon Botanic Garden.

Dinner: Go to Minibar for dinner

There’s so much to see and do, but these are my choices for how to spend two days in Lisbon. The city is quite busy, so I recommend you make reservations for your dining.

José Ignacio

Where to Stay: Punta del Este is one of South America’s most famous beaches. Brazilians and Argentines flock to Punte del Este for glorious, upscale beachside relaxation, glamour, and fun. We decided to stay in a smaller town adjacent to Punta del Este, José Ignacio, Uruguay which is quieter and cozier.

Playa Vik José Ignacio: The hotel we chose was the absolutely stunning Playa Vik hotel, owned by the well-known Vik family, who owns three hotels in the José Ignacio area, Playa Vik, Bahia Vik, and Estancia Vik. Playa Vik is located on the beach and offers absolutely stunning ocean views. Bahia Vik is also beachside, but try Estancia Vik, situated in the countryside, for something a little more rustic. To get to Playa Vik from Montevideo, you can hire a driver or take a local bus from the Tres Cruces bus station in Montevideo, which will drop you off at a small bus stop in José Ignacio. The bus stop is within walking distance of both Playa Vik and Bahia Vik.

What to Do:

Pool: At least one day must be devoted to lounging by Playa Vik’s epic infinity pool. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it is the ultimate location for tranquility and luxury. Enjoy poolside cocktails and snacks while you relax and take in the views.

Beach: A stroll by the water and swimming in the ocean is an absolute must!

Spa: Although Playa Vik doesn’t have a spa, Bahia Vik is just steps away and has a full spa with great massages, a tranquility area, and yoga classes.

Wine Tasting: Playa Vik offers a curated wine tasting experience through The Wine Experience, where you can sample Uruguayan wines as well as wines from the Vik family wineries in Chile. A hearty platter of cheeses and bread are included, and the tasting takes place on a patio where you can marvel at the legendary local sunset.

Where to Eat:

Parador La Huella: This restaurant, which has a spot on Pellegrino’s illustrious Latin America 50 best list, is the quintessential beach restaurant I have ever been to. Grab an outdoor table, dig your toes into the sand, and kick off your meal with a craft cocktail. From there, indulge in dishes featuring local goods like a brie, hazelnut, and honey appetizer, delicate ravioli, housemade bread and dips, and fresh gazpacho. La Huella is within walking distance from Playa Vik, which means you can enjoy as many cocktails as you want!

Playa Vik: Playa Vik hosts a gorgeous waterfront restaurant with delicious fare like cheesy baked vegetable lasagna, a burrata and zucchini salad, and desserts like dulce de leche flan.

Estancia Vik: One evening, we reserved a driver from Playa Vik to take us to visit the acclaimed parrillero at Estacia Vik, where the hotel hosted a lavish pizza party with pizzas served straight from the wood-fired oven, free-flowing wine, and live music. We dined at a communal table and stuffed ourselves with a variety of pizza, including a creamy garlic and herb white pizza, pizza topped with locally foraged mushrooms, a bright margherita pizza, and more. We laughed, ate, danced, and drank the evening away – it was, quite honestly, one of the most fun evenings of my life.

Canelones

The charming vineyards of Uruguay are largely located in the Canelones region, which is about 90 minutes north of Montevideo. We booked a trip to Canelones through Wine Explorers Uruguay, who took us to the Pizzorno Vineyard and arranged for our adventure in Canelones.

Pizzorno Vineyard: The Pizzorno vineyard includes an inn, winery, and restaurant. The inn is a small bed and breakfast where you can reserve a cozy room with a patio overlooking the vineyards. Breakfast is included, and you can dine at the winery’s restaurant. We engaged in a lengthy winery tour where we learned about the local Uruguayan grape, tannat, and then sampled a series of wines with a multi-course lunch. From canapes to salads to the most luscious and flavorful vegetable risotto to a sweet strawberry dessert, it was an incredibly decadent meal.

The Verdict

Uruguay has much to offer beyond Montevideo! Be sure to include time in your trip to visit Uruguay’s beaches and wineries.

Where to Stay in Montevideo

We spent a total of three nights on our weekend trip to Montevideo. We stayed in the tiny, quaint Hotel Palacio, which met all of our needs: close to different local sites and cafes, comfortable, and affordable. The hotel is located in the Cuidad Vieja, which is the old part of town where you can find most of the historical sites. It is within walking distance of the Cordón and Palermo neighborhoods, where you can find many of the best bars and restaurants in Montevideo!

What to do

Curioso City Walking Tour: We loved this walk through the Cuidad Vieja, where we learned all about Uruguay’s history. We visited Independence Square, stopped at the famous Puerto Mercado, took pictures at the Cuidadela Gate, and went into the Artigas Mausoleum. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the city and gave us detailed insight into the culture, politics, and history of Uruguay at large.

A Stroll Along La Rambla: La Rambla is one of the longest sidewalks in the world, and it happens to be along Montevideo’s beautiful waterfront. During a walk along La Rambla, you will see surfers, swimmers, sunbathers, volleyball players, musicians, beachside cafes, and more. Because we visited Uruguay in December, during its summer, the beach was packed with locals enjoying the warm weather. The walkway links Cuidad Vieja with Carrasco, although we didn’t walk quite that far. We strolled for several miles and then jumped off for a cocktail in Cordón. I highly recommend spending an afternoon wandering down La Rambla during your weekend in Montevideo. It’s a great way to enjoy the local life!

Where to Eat and Drink

Our weekend in Montevideo was not without several delicious culinary experiences. We tried to visit spots in the ciudad vieja and different neighborhoods such as Cordón and Carrasco.

Escaramuza Café: We loved this gorgeous café in Cordon so much that we went back twice. You enter first into a charming bookstore, where the bookshelves are filled with books all the way to the ceiling, and then walk straight back into a plant and light-filled patio, where guests lounge for hours over coffee and the most delicious pastries, including an absolutely divine dulce de leche lava cake. From scones to brownies to tortas to tartas this spot is a dessert lovers’ paradise and a dreamy location for whiling away an afternoon during your weekend in Montevideo.

Federacion: Check out this sidewalk café and treat yourself to hot chocolate and a buttery croissant.

Cafe Brasilero: Small but historically significant as the oldest cafe in Montevideo, a stop at this cafe is an absolute must during a weekend in Montevideo. Located in Cuidad Vieja, we found the cafe to be relaxing and cozy, with great cappuccinos!

Café La Farmacia: This is a great breakfast spot in Ciudad Vieja, with a charming old-world ambiance, warm lattes, and simple breakfast dishes like avocado toast and cheese empanadas.

Dueto Cocina Urbana: Like Argentina, Uruguay serves up plenty of delicious Italian fare, thanks to the influence of Italian immigrants. Dueto is a charming and elegant venue with simple Italian fare, including pastas, freshly made bread, salads, and desserts. Helpful tip: This restaurant is right next door to Hotel Palacio in the Cuidad Vieja!

Manzanar: For a super trendy dining experience during your weekend in Montevideo, try Manzanar. Tasty cocktails combined with a hip décor and menu eclectic menu featuring everything from pizza to sushi, we ate, drank and people watched for hours. Manzanar is located in Carrasco, a neighborhood that is a on the other side of town from the old city, but is a modern, high-end part of town where some of the more upscale dining venues are located.

Namaste: It’s always interesting to see how other countries interpret the cuisine of other cultures. We visited this unique spot for lunch and indulged in a fusion fare that included wok-fried noodles, curry-infused risotto, and vegetarian chivitos, which are traditional Uruguayan sandwiches.

Baker’s Bar, KFE, and Office Bar: Fun and filled with locals. Stop by any of these spots for a quick drink on your way to dinner or after dinner!

The Verdict

A weekend in Montevideo is fun, interesting, and relaxing. From the historical sites to the bevy of cafes to the lovely beachfront La Rambla to the variety of dining options, we had a blast and highly recommend this city for visiting!

Did you know that the Champagne region of France is home to one of the largest Christmas markets in the country? We headed to Reims, France, to explore their historic Reims Christmas Market. At the base of the Norte Dame Cathedral, you will find chalets selling locally made products, plenty of food, and, of course, Champagne. For the 2023 season, the market will be open from November 24th until December 24th. Here are some of the highlights:

Getting to the Reims Christmas Market

Reims, a small city located in the Champagne region of France, is close to major cities such as Paris and Brussels, making it a perfect getaway spot. A fast train (TGV) can get you from Paris to Reims in 45 minutes, making it doable even for a day trip. Even traveling by car to the Reims Christmas Market is easy as there are plenty of parking garages. It takes around 3 hours to get to Brussels and 2 hours to get to Paris. Christmas markets are popular among locals and travelers alike, so going on a weekday is best to avoid large crowds. For this trip, we stayed at the Mercure Parc des Expositions, which, although not in the city center, has comfy rooms, and free parking. You can get to the city center in less than 30 minutes by bus.

About the Reims Christmas Market

European Christmas Markets are magical. The lights flickering in the cold air, the scent of roasted chestnuts, and the cozy chalets serving mulled wine make for the perfect backdrop for the holiday season. Reims Christmas Market is no different. Bundle up (it was pretty cold when we went) and wear your comfy shoes to explore not only the enclosed market area but many of the light installations throughout the city. 

Food and Drink at the Market

When you go to the Reims Christmas Market, make sure you go hungry! Located in the Champagne region of France, several stands highlight the regional producers. One of my favorite large Champagne houses, Veuve Cliquot, has a fabulous heated tent with plenty of Champagne, charcuterie boards, and truffle chips. Champagne Lanson has a lively bar in the heart of the market that is quite popular, especially later in the evening. There are plenty of local cheeses, cured meats, and sweets for sale for you to indulge. 

We truly enjoyed our time at the market and the city of Reims. It’s festive and classy, just like the product it is known for, Champagne.

In 2010, I experienced Vienna for the first time and I was instantly enamored with the city. I went to the city by myself and took in the lovely buildings, silently shed a tear watching Don Giovanni, and ate the famous Sacher Torte. I returned in 2011 with a good friend, but always felt I wanted to return with someone I was in love with as the city is so romantic. Fast forward to December 31^st, 2014. My now husband and I were in our gala attire ready to embark on a fairytale journey: the Hofburg Silvesterball.  The Silvesterball marks the start of the ball season in Vienna. If you travel to Vienna during the month of January, I highly suggest you pack a ball gown or tuxedo since you will be tempted to waltz away in the lovely settings of the city.

Dance we did as the clock was approaching midnight. We are no expert waltz dancers but we soon found out the level on the dance floor was quite diverse as well. We let our insecurities go and swayed around the grand ballroom. It soon became midnight and we kissed to welcome 2015. 2014 was a year filled with ups and downs and this New Year began in a very beautiful way.

A Viennese ball has been on my bucket-list since my first trip to Austria.  I love the formality of the Hofburg Silvesterball. Every year, I am always excited to get dressed up in my evening dress uniform to celebrate the Marine Corps Ball. Love the old world glamour and elegance of these events. I’m thankful we had the opportunity to experience this event.  The music, décor, and atmosphere were truly magical.

The verdict: if you’re in Vienna during the ball season, the Hofburg Silvesterball is a must do.
